Mr. Babiker Hamdein, Minister of Health and Social Care for the Darfur Regional Government, visited the headquarters of the African Center for Governance, Peace, and Transformation Studies today to enhance cooperation and partnerships with scientific research, educational, and training institutions.
During the visit, the Minister received a briefing from Dr. Mahmoud Zain Al-Abedin, Director-General, along with the Center’s experts, highlighting the initiatives, programs, and interventions carried out by the Center in recent months.
Minister Hamdein praised the Center’s significant efforts both prior to and during the war, particularly its support for national institutions and peace-process partners through training and capacity building. He underscored the pivotal role played by research centers and civil society organizations in fostering social peace, leading initiatives in human rights and psychosocial support, and driving post-conflict reconstruction in affected areas. He also outlined the Regional Government’s ongoing projects, notably the digitization and mapping of data regarding internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Darfur residing in safe states across Sudan, providing IDP relief, and documenting militia violations against civilians and civilian infrastructure. He affirmed that the region utilizes effective mechanisms in close coordination with federal institutions and civil society.
For his part, Dr. Mahmoud Zain Al-Abedin, Director of the Center, thanked the Minister and his accompanying delegation for visiting the headquarters. Outlining the Center’s achievements, he stated that the Center has conducted 67 events since the outbreak of the war, benefiting 6,784 trainees and participants from government agencies, the private sector, and civil society. He added that the Center now relies on a panel of 91 experts across diverse fields, establishing itself as a key supporting partner for national institutions in humanitarian response, recovery, reconstruction, and institutional development. He noted that the Center is currently prioritizing five key areas aligned with government efforts toward sustainable stability and recovery.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to hold joint awareness sessions and dialogue forums addressing human rights, psychosocial recovery, and related social issues.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Tijani Mohamed Hassan, Executive Director of the Ministry of Health in the Darfur Regional Government. Representatives from the Center included Dr. Kamal Dandrawi, Human Rights Expert; Dr. Mohamed Adam Ahmed, Expert in Administrative Development and Partnerships; Mr. Saddam Ibrahim, External Relations Coordinator; and Ms. Inas Babiker, Executive Director.
